Job Description

Staff engineer for Advanced Propulsion Electrical Systems.  Provides project and technical leadership for complex multi-disciplinary, multi-organizational design projects predominantly in support of future submarine propulsion plants. 

Provides technical leadership and guidance to NNS, Government and Industry Partners throughout system concept, design, development, prototype, testing and final production.  Responsible to ensure that final designed systems meet all specified and derived requirements. 

Develops and reviews NNS, Government and Industry Partner designs. Identifies deficiencies in system development, prototype development, execution & test plans, and is responsible for technical leadership of a cross-organizational engineering team to resolve those deficiencies.

Leads and performs research and develops concepts for propulsion plant systems. Applies advanced technical principals and concepts to develop and implement solutions to complex technical problems.

Provides key technical guidance to program management to ensure long term success of propulsion plant programs and strategic company initiatives. Requires working knowledge of multiple engineering disciplines.


Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Basic Qualifications

14 Years with Bachelors in Science; 12 Years with Masters; 9 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

Requires experience with integration of propulsion plant systems aboard Navy platforms. The candidate should have significant experience in the design and/or integration of complex systems involving power generation and distribution and specific experience with the integration of motors, motor drives, generators and protection systems.
