The Role
The successful candidate will lead a team responsible for developing, testing, and qualifying critical electrical systems that ensure the reliability, efficiency, and safety of propulsion operations for SSNX. The incumbent will have a strong technical background in electrical engineering within naval propulsion systems, along with exceptional leadership and project management skills.
- Oversee project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation to meet project milestones and ensure timely delivery within budget constraints.
- Coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineering, systems engineering, and project management, to align engineering efforts across SSNX’s propulsion systems.
- Manage task workload, Training with Purpose (TWP), and track critical skills required for team success.
- Provide technical direction for the design, integration, and qualification of electrical systems within the SSNX propulsion plant.
- Review and approve engineering analyses, design documentation, and test results to ensure systems meet operational and safety standards.
- Oversee troubleshooting, risk assessment, and resolution of technical issues related to electrical components and systems.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for electrical engineering within the propulsion plant scope of the SSNX program, liaising with program managers, senior leadership, and other key stakeholders.
- Lead technical discussions and participate in program reviews, highlighting the team’s contributions and addressing any concerns related to propulsion plant electrical engineering.
- Develop and manage the team’s budget, including projections for resource needs, material costs, and other expenditures.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and implement process improvements that increase operational efficiency.
- Oversee procurement and material tracking, ensuring all required equipment and materials are available for successful project execution.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the team’s productivity, reduce costs, and improve the quality and reliability of electrical engineering solutions.
- Track and manage operational availability (Ao) metrics and system readiness for propulsion plant components.
- Work collaboratively with other departments to optimize system availability and minimize downtime.
- Assess and address team skills and training requirements, ensuring alignment with project needs and organizational goals.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
