The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

 

This position is for the Alexandria Engineering Office within the E35 Department (Submarine Engineering - Advanced Capabilities). Should be able to collaborate and perform within a cross-functional team. This position will regularly work and communicate with other Engineers/Designers across Departments via email, phone, and in person meetings.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate will have the following experience/attributes:

  • Hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, or electro-mechanical systems
  • MATLAB
  • FEA
  • Experience with Inventor 3D or other 3D modeling software
  • Significant interest in learning from others
  • Interested in solving challenging problems
  • Comfortable researching and developing solutions in new areas (with limited previous exposure)
  • Appreciates learning new skills and investigating innovative technologies
  • Self-starter, proficient communicator, and active listener
  • Persistent in the pursuit o achieving successful results

  • Contributes to a methodical problem solving approach
