The Role

The Charleston Operations Communications Representative is responsible for planning and coordinating all local and state-level communications activities for HII Newport News Shipbuilding Charleston Operations. This role serves as the primary communications liaison supporting internal workforce communications, local community relations messaging, and site-level brand alignment in partnership with enterprise communications team at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia and, where needed for media relations, HII.

 

The Communications Representative develops and executes communication strategies that support workforce engagement, operational priorities, recruiting initiatives, community relations, and corporate citizenship efforts throughout the South Carolina region. The role works closely with site leadership, Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, Government & Community Relations, Training, Operations, and corporate communications teams to ensure consistent messaging, strong brand representation, and effective stakeholder engagement. Writes, edits and prepares internal company publications and communications. Selects, writes, and reviews editorials and special articles. Develops, recommends, and maintains editorial policy. Interviews to obtain items for publication and to verify facts; assigns or approves artwork; and approves final proofs and page layouts, and websites. May coordinate production and distribution activities.

 

This position requires a highly organized, adaptable communications professional capable of operating in a fast-paced industrial and defense manufacturing environment while balancing strategic messaging with hands-on execution.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Internal Communications –

  • Lead development and execution of internal communications strategies supporting Charleston Operations employees and leadership.
  • Draft and distribute site-wide communications including announcements, newsletters, leadership messages, talking points, presentations, digital signage, and operational updates.
  • Support communication efforts tied to workforce engagement, culture initiatives, safety campaigns, training initiatives, recruiting efforts, and organizational changes.
  • Partner with operations leadership to ensure timely and accurate communication of production, workforce, and business priorities.
  • Support employee events, town halls, recognition programs, and workforce engagement activities.

 

Liaison with Corporate-driven External Communications & Public Relations  –

  • Collaborate with NNS VA and HII Communications as well as  Government & Community relations personnel to support public-facing initiatives
  • Ensure Charleston Operations communications align with HII and Newport News Shipbuilding branding, messaging standards, and communications protocols.
  • Coordinate closely with Virginia-based communications personnel to maintain consistency across enterprise messaging and external positioning.
  • Coordinate local and state-level external communications activities in alignment with enterprise communications strategy.
  • Assist in development of communications materials highlighting workforce development, economic impact, hiring initiatives, community partnerships, and operational milestones.
  • Assist with hiring event communications, workforce storytelling, and talent pipeline initiatives in alignment with NNS Communications recruitment strategy.

 

Other duties may include:

  • Support of executive & strategic communications
  • Preparation and execution of community events
  • Assistance with crisis communications, rapid response messaging, weather alerts, and the like

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 4 year of relevant professional experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Bachelor's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
  • Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience
  • Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience
  • High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience
  • High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience
