'ABILITY' Summer Intern

Newport News Shipbuilding offers the ‘Ability’ Summer Internship Program to provide an opportunity for disabled college students to receive valuable on the job training and work experience in technical or administrative positions and provide the opportunity to possibly gain future full time employment. Students will have the opportunity to work 30 hours a week for 8 consecutive weeks during the summer months on a variety of assignments related to their major. Applications will be accepted until November 29, 2020. Both telework and onsite internships options may be available. Some engineering, technical, and waterfront positions may require the ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites, including those aboard ships under various stages of construction or overhaul, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling, stooping, standing, etc. Applicants must upload a copy of their unofficial transcripts to be considered. Applicants may be disqualified if unofficial transcript is not provided.  

Basic Qualifications

 

1. Must have a documented disability
(Letter from college/university disability services stating participation in the program required)

 

2. Be enrolled in a  STEM-related degree program that supports the company’s business requirements. Typically in the following areas: • Computer Science, Engineering (must be ABET accredited) and Information Technology

 

3. Have attended a college or university and completed at least one year of course work by May 2021 

 

4. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (unofficial transcripts will be required)  

 

5. Attend a college/university (undergraduate or graduate program) in the fall following the internship

 

6. Successfully complete a criminal background investigation and a hair follicle drug screen

 

7. Work a 30-hour work week for 8 weeks during the summer
