CHIEF DATA ARCHITECT

Job Description

Designs and defines system architecture for new or existing complex computer systems. Determines systems specifications, input/output processes, and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility and maintenance of system security. Coordinates design of subsystems and integration of total system. Identifies, analyzes, and resolves program support deficiencies. Develops and recommends corrective actions. May provide technical guidance for database administrators and software developers.

Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking someone with a mastery in data architecture to help lead the new Data Office within our Business Transformation & Technology Department.  We are looking for someone with equal commitment to technical excellence and growing customer relationships, someone who is seeking to grow with the evolving technology of data management to support our analytical capabilities across the Newport News Shipyard. If you possess a demonstrated history of creative problem solving and superior data architecture skills; an in-depth understanding of data architecture best practices to include emerging data science trends and technologies; and rapidly adopting, architecting and implementing solutions, we want to talk to you. As a key leader within the Data Office, you will play an important role in the transformation of our company’s data capabilities.

Specifically you will: Establish a holistic Architecture for Data Management.  Establish a NNS Data Centric Framework.  Establish Metadata Standards.  Establish data governance roles and accountability.  Establish a Data Lake Framework to enable real time access to disparate and disjointed data throughout NNS.  Build and visualize all NNS data in one view under a standardized data framework.  Introduce and guide non-relational database solutions (NoSQL, Time-Series) into our on-premises architecture for various data types (documents, time critical, IoT, non-structured).  Advise and guide connections and integration to Cloud-provider based products supporting these different data storage types.  Advise on a Robust Data Management Program and culture of data quality.  Work with team to ensure data management and analytics efforts meet intended end states and user satisfaction.  Advise in the deployment of a data strategy to complex industrial problems and transformational business initiatives.  Assist in the development of long term implementation strategies for data management capabilities across our organization. 

Demonstrate proficiency in verbal communication and presenting to large audiences and senior leadership.  Hands-on, self-starter who is capable and willing to learn and grow with the business.  Detail and results oriented, capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Familiarity with Agile methodology (KanBan).

With Master Data Architecture Experience, work will include collaboration on the following data management functions:

  • Structured Query Language (SQL), Non-Relational Database solution Design (NoSQL) Experience, Time-Series Database Design and Implementation Experience
  • Cloud-provider Database Solutions/Tools Experience, Structured Database/Relational Database Design, Unstructured Data Best Practices
  • Data Quality & Profiling, Data integrity, Data Analysis, Data Security, Data Transference, Data Governance, Data Mining, Data modelling 
  • Account and File Management. Business Intelligence Tools, Data Validation, Workflow Optimization / Business Processes, Understanding of data categorization and meta data deployment best practices  

Basic Qualifications

14 Years with Bachelor of Science degree in related field; 12 years of relevant professional experience with a Master's Degree; 9 years of relevant professional experience with a PhD.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal Candidate is expected to demonstrate hands on expertise for designing and executing towards successful implementation in at least a few of the areas listed below: 
•    Advanced working knowledge of relational/SQL databases and experience working with non-relational and/or time-series databases, Big data etc.
•    Expert in one or more areas across Data analytics domain including data storage (Data Lake & Data Warehouse), data integration, business intelligence
•    Expertise in data mapping, categorization, mining and master data architecture with emphasis on data security
•    Prior experience in driving implementations of domain driven designs of Data Models, Data APIs and Data Products
•    Prior experience in data modeling including logical and physical data models
•    Prior experience with leading and partnering with software engineering to execute proof of concepts to ensure feasibility of architecture solutions
•    Experience in defining target state technology architecture and roadmaps
•    Experience in working with other architects to define and develop cross-function technology stack interactions.
•    Experience in defining and using AI/ML towards data driven decision making will be preferred
