The Role

This position is for an advanced senior structural engineer in the CVN 78 Propulsion Plant Structures and Shielding Department (E70SSH).  The primary duties are to function as the Propulsion Plant Planning Yard and as the Lead Design Agent for the CVN 78 Class in support of FORD class.  

 

The person in this position will report to the E70 Structures and Shielding Engineering Manager and matrixed to the Chief Engineer Office. The individual will be largely self-directed and will perform their duties without appreciable supervision.  This person will have broad latitude to determine the most appropriate methodology to use to accomplish assigned tasks.  Serves as a technical expert guiding the resolution to complex or unique problems, minimizing the impact to ship design or construction.  Develops advanced technological ideas and guides their development into the production environment. Researches and develops advanced new applications resulting in new product/business opportunities for the company. This position will be responsible for the quality and timeliness of all E70 SSH technical submittals.   Serve as a sector subject matter expert in reactor plant structural and shielding engineering and related analysis techniques. Ability to train engineers in both a formal and informal setting.

 

Internal contacts include all levels of engineering and waterfront personnel.  External contacts will include all E70 SSH customers/suppliers (NAVSEA, Bettis Ship’s Force, SOS, etc.). Provides input/assistance to E&D Division’s Chief Engineer’s office.  Coordination with other Structural Engineering departments.  Serve as a subject matter expert for NAVSEA and Bettis.

•    Perform research/analytical tasks on highly complex projects while providing technical leadership/direction to others for specific engineering projects/programs.
•    Provide guidance /assistance to others performing engineering analyses within E70 and across the sector.
•    Serve as a mentor to supervisors/engineers to develop their knowledge, technical skills and expertise.
•    Provide written reports/presentations detailing the results/analyses and/or studies performed.  
•    Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing work to meet cost schedule and quality objectives.
•    Plan/organize/direct/review the work of engineers/designers
•    Writes/reviews/edits letters, reports and other technical documents.
•    Integrates cross functional (fluids/mechanical/electrical/structural, nuclear/non-nuclear) projects, programs, and teams
•    Manages multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing work to meet cost schedule and quality objectives.  
•    Plans/Convenes/chairs engineering review boards for complex projects
•    Serves as final word for resolution of technical issues

Must Have

Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience 
Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

A Masters in Civil or Structural Engineering and/or professional registration is preferred.  Experience presenting at technical societies, and symposiums is preferred.  An extensive nuclear background with experience in research, design, project management, and overall general problem solving associated with complex designs including shielding design and reactor compartment containment design.  Knowledge of the structural and shielding manufacturing processes currently used by the construction value stream.  Knowledge of NAVY structures and shielding requirements.   Ability to administrate and coordinate work of engineers within E70 SSH and with other areas.
