The Role

HII seeks a motivated and dynamic attorney to serve in the role of Senior Staff Counsel at its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) Division. Located in Newport News, Virginia, NNS designs and builds the most advanced ships in the world using its expertise in nuclear propulsion, naval design, and high-tech manufacturing. NNS is currently building the new Ford-class aircraft carriers and Virginia-class fast-attack submarines, modules for Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarines, and performing Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) on Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. NNS also provides fleet support services in Navy ports worldwide. With approximately $6 billion in revenues and more than 25,000 employees, NNS is the largest industrial employer in Virginia and the largest shipbuilding company in the United States. The selected attorney will report directly to the Vice President and Chief Counsel of NNS and advise NNS’s supply chain organization. The supply chain organization supports all shipbuilding programs and is integral to NNS’s business operations. Supply chain ensures timely procurement of quality material and services to support ship construction.  NNS works with over 2500 suppliers across all fifty states and internationally.  The division places and manages billions of dollars in purchases per year from standard company stock to complex critical products and services.

Candidate will provide strategic and day-to-day legal and business counsel to supply chain personnel, including its executive leadership, as follows:

  • Draft, review, and advise on agreements including third party terms, software licensing agreements, government contracts, construction contracts, non-disclosure agreements, and lease agreements.
  • Advise both entry-level buyers and senior leadership on emergent supply chain issues including quality matters, warranty, delay, bankruptcy, and other contract enforcement actions.
  • Collaborate with investigations counsel on supplier quality issues and FAR Mandatory Disclosures to report supplier fraud and misconduct.
  • Train, mentor, and partner with clients and colleagues across the business, at all levels of expertise, and build a broad and deep understanding of significant legal considerations in leading and growing the business.
  • Seamlessly integrate practical business advice and considerations into legal counsel to position the business to avoid potential problems, meet day-to-day challenges, and improve performance and operations.

Must Have

  • J.D. degree and Virginia State Bar membership (or ability to obtain state corporate counsel license), plus 4 or more years of experience as a practicing attorney.

  • Current active security clearance or the ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance.

Nice to Have

Prior government contracts experience, including exposure to Department of Navy contracts and the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program, is preferred, in addition to a background in commercial contracting, and provision of general business counsel.

Also nice to have:

  • FAR and DFARS compliance

  • Cost allowability, cost accounting issues

  • Real estate/Construction contracts exposure

  • Software and IT licensing agreements
