Develops and applies engineering-based processes to estimate costs for shipbuilding, ship repair and heavy industrial manufacturing projects to aid management in establishing and analyzing contract pricing and performance measurement baselines for products and/or services.  Utilizes a variety of data sources, analytical tools, and applications.


In addition to strong oral and written communication skills, effectively collaborates with representatives of other functional areas including design engineering, production, planning, scheduling, and supply chain management to identify and quantify types of materials and equipment required to satisfy contract requirements.  Utilizes and applies cost estimate development knowledge related to manufacturing processes, intermediate and finished products, services, and product types using information sources including, but not limited to, blueprints, digital design information, and performance specifications.


This position is distinguished from other cost estimator positions as the levels of responsibilities and complexity of work requires a degree in engineering or equivalent engineering experience.

  • Itemizes tools, fixtures, or equipment to be manufactured by company or purchased from outside sources.
  • Develops estimates for cost of materials, purchased equipment, subcontracted work, production activities and requirements, and labor.
Job Description

Basic Qualifications

5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
