The Role

This Job Listing is for recent or upcoming 2024 High School Graduates. Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is offering a $1000 sign-on bonus to Trade Trainee hires. In addition, Newport News Shipbuilding is offering $1,000 in relocation assistance to Trade Trainee new hires that live 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. Job seekers who apply until August 1, 2024, are eligible for the sign-on bonus and relocation bonus. Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. Courses are offered once a month with 8-10 students per class. The Deck Electrician Trainee program is offered at Thomas Nelson Community College (Hampton, VA). This is a 2-week (UNPAID) program (80 hours), 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Monday thru Friday). Deck Electricians work on many electrical systems aboard the ship including lighting, power distribution, communications or navigation. Deck Electricians can quickly switch between different tasks ranging from lighting and receptacle hook-ups, installing wire way racks and electrical controls, lighting maintenance, and performing preventative maintenance

Must Have

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.

 

Candidates must be able to:

  • Climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
  • Work in small, tight, or confined spaces.
  • Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
  • Lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more
  • Work while repeatedly reaching overhead.
  • Work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
  • Work in areas with radiation.
  • Take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Take and pass the 2 Week Deck Electrician Trainee Program
  • Work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Take and pass a Physical Agility Test.
