The Role

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

 

This position will demonstrate expertise with digital initiatives, reality capture, 3D modeling programs, translation and management of design files, and experience with advanced design technology and innovation projects. Thorough knowledge of accepted Piping & amp; Mechanical design methods and concepts, ship checking skills, and the applicant must be familiar with engineering, design, security, and other principles relating to Naval ship design.  The ability to physically access a wide variety of working sites, including those aboard commissioned ships, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited keeling, stooping, standing, etc. Requires the ability to obtain and retain a security clearance and may require ability to obtain and retain full or partial radiation worker qualifications.


This position may have short‐duration work away from NNS in such areas as San Diego, CA, Bremerton, WA, Yokosuka, Japan, or other areas of ship operations.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience

 

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

Prefer the candidate to have the following:

 

  • Previous deck plate experience in Piping departments and a working knowledge of CVN68 Class Reactor/propulsion plants is preferred.
  • Applicant should have demonstrated history of collaborative relationships with both internal and external customers achieved through strong interpersonal, organization, and communication skills.
  • An understanding of shipbuilding processes and military specifications.
  • The ability to perform design-related math functions and have the ability to read and interpret written instructions and drawings.
  • Familiarity with Submarine Planning Yard products (LAR, RLAR, SRD, Shipalt, etc.).
  • The ability to use AutoCAD, AutoCAD Inventor, Sharepoint, NX, and basic computer skills (e.g. MS Office Suite).
