The Role
Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.
The selected candidate will:
- Perform design studies for future US Navy attack submarines
- Perform technology research and development studies to influence the future design of US Navy submarines
- Need to be flexible with work assignments, as this position will also be required to develop products for other routed systems such as electrical, cableways, HVAC, etc.
- Be able to develop and effectively communicate design packages to both internal leadership and external customer(s).Be prepared to work independently and in groups, as part of a concept design team with engineers and designers to translate operational capabilities and technology selections into workable 3D product model arrangements
- Be prepared to lead overall team of people during supervisor absents
- This position will work closely with engineering and design personnel/peers for feedback in these areas, and require regular interface with these teams to accomplish responsibilities outlined above
- Candidate should have the ability to manage and track the products in their AOR, represent the team in meetings, and be prepared to brief management with status updates if needed
- This candidate will also serve as an advisor to management, other task leads, and other various customers when needed
- The selected candidate will lead and mentor other Vent Designers for Whole Ship Vent Design studies for future US Navy Attack Submarines
- Candidate will also be responsible for leading and mentoring other Vent Designers supporting technology research and development studies as well as coordinating with other design and engineering disciplines as the design matures to ensure proper integration of your systems
- This is all to influence enhanced capabilities of future US Navy Submarines including support of Undersea Warfare (USW) design concepts
Must Have
Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience
One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:
- NNS Apprentice School graduate
- Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
- High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
- High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
Nice to Have
• Extensive experience with the arrangement design of submarine vent systems and large components.
• Knowledge of US Navy submarine systems, requirements, system integration, arrangement best practices, and submarine unique considerations is preferred.
• Extensive knowledge and experience using Siemens NX and Teamcenter.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently, and in groups.
