Job Description

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments. Designers in the Digital Capabilities Lab modify existing designs and create new designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.  Utilizing computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as CATIA, NX, and Autodesk to convert models and associated metadata into a format conducive to mobile technology.  Ensure existing metadata is accurately transferred into mobile solutions.  Using 3D software tools, designers manipulate, skin, light map and animate translated models to ensure clear conveyance of purpose.  
Skills: Mastery of one or all of the CATIA V4 and V5, Siemens NX, and the suite of Autodesk design software.  Must possess the ability to create geometry, shade, and color/skin models as well as train others in those functions.  Must thoroughly understand the metadata associated with PLM and information needed for PMI.  Must be able to readily translate one file type of multiple file formats into a faceted file type, including accurate translation of model data.  The ability to create models from 2D drawings or 3D point cloud scans is expected.  Expected to have master knowledge of the rendering and animation of models in Unity Pro.
Leadership: Minimal supervision. Work may be done without established procedures. May assist in orienting, training, assigning, prioritizing and checking the work of lower level employees. Often designated as lead worker. Will work to push the boundaries of their craft and bring new ideas and best practices back to the team.

Basic Qualifications

Associate's Degree and 6 years of experience. 2 years of related experience can be substituted for Associate's degree. 4 years of non-related experience can be substituted for Associate's degree. An Apprentice Certificate or graduation from Navy Nuclear Power School can be substituted for Associate's degree.
