The Role

Oversees complex engineering projects and operations. Manages engineering teams, ensuring compliance with industrial, technical, and governmental regulatory standards. Drives innovation, quality, and efficiency among engineering personnel and other stakeholders. Serves as the senior technical authority for the company, providing direction on system level design, integration, and execution of advanced engineering solutions. Strategic planning and coordination with other departments, divisions, external partners and leadership will be required in the development and implementation of engineering solutions to meet organizational goals.

The Newport News Shipbuilding Chief Engineer oversees complex engineering projects and operations. Manages engineering teams, ensuring compliance with industrial, technical, and governmental regulatory standards. Drives innovation, quality, and efficiency among engineering personnel and other stakeholders. Serves as the senior technical authority for the company, providing direction on system level design, integration, and execution of advanced engineering solutions. Strategic planning and coordination with other departments, divisions, external partners and leadership will be required in the development and implementation of engineering solutions to meet organizational goals.
Responsibilities include:
• Leading a team of Principle Engineers covering a diverse set of engineering disciplines.
• Frequently interfacing with Naval Sea Systems Command and other Navy organizations (established relations with those organizations is desired).
• Acting as the senior technical authority for Newport News Shipbuilding and, as designated by NAVSEA, may have government delegated approval authority.
• Supporting cross-functional teams by gathering and organizing data related to investment strategies across operations, supply chain, workforce, and infrastructure.

Must Have

Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering. 10 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design or equivalent. A Master of Science degree in Engineering and professional registration with 8 years of relevant experience are preferred.

Nice to Have

• 15-20 years of progressive technical engineering experience.
• A detailed understanding of submarine and carrier design, system operation, and ship construction practices and requirements.
• Nuclear propulsion experience.
• Demonstrated history of leading the development of complex systems or equipment and experience leading investigations into complex engineering or quality issues.
