The Role
HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division seeks a creative self-starter with well-rounded communications and special events experience to join our Communications team. The director of culture and protocol is responsible for helping shape Newport News Shipbuilding’s culture to inspire shipbuilder pride and ownership, and developing creative ways to rally the shipbuilding team in support of the Navy’s national security mission. This position also provides communications counsel and staffing support and plays a key role in the Communications Division’s public affairs radiological control emergency response efforts.
Responsibilities include:
- The planning, coordination and execution of ship keel-laying, christening and other major milestone ship construction and employee recognition events.
- Oversight of NNS Outfitters, the shipyard’s logo store.
- Support of NNS’ senior leadership team to ensure objectives and key messages are aligned with the shipyard’s operational strategy.
Should have:
- Protocol officer certification or equivalent experience
- Corporate/business communications experience
- Managerial/supervisory experience
- Acute attention to detail
- Strong writing skills and AP Style proficiency
- The ability to multi-task and work with all levels across the organization
Must Have
Bachelors degree plus 10 years of applicable progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience OR Master's degree and 8 years relevant experience
Nice to Have
- Experience working with Social Tables or equivalent event planning tools
- An understanding of the business and Newport News Shipbuilding’s Navy customer
