The Role

Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.

The SSN(X) Platform Mechanical team is seeking creative, motivated, and technically strong engineers to join our diverse, dynamic and dedicated team of engineers.  As a member of our team you’ll have the once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the Navy’s next generation fast attack submarine.  

The mechanical team is responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex mechanical systems across the non-propulsion areas of the submarine, including payload launch and recovery, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, masts, and many others.  You will team with the Navy and industry to develop these systems, molding what will become the world’s most advanced and capable submarine.
 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

· Provide technical support for key mechanical systems on the submarine
    · Develop and mature innovative new design concepts considering functional requirements, future technologies, operational needs, construction and lessons from legacy systems
    · Develop and review technical calculations, reports, presentations and other products
    · Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups 
    · Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities

    · A technical background with a knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from the concept stage through production and installation
    · Be innovative, helping to develop and inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals
    · Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the presentation of technical reports and briefs to the Navy, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners 
 
Preferred Qualifications:
    • An understanding of how mechanical systems interface with structures, electrical, and other mechanical systems
    • An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, mechanical joints, and others
    • Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
    • The ability to work in and help foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
    • Exhibit a strong desire for continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment
    • Operational experience on commissioned or under construction Navy vessels is a plus
