The Role
Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.
This position is intended for the Platform Signatures group in Department E46 Signatures & Hydrodynamics. The candidate will be responsible for working with junior engineers and their supervisor to complete tasks, learn how to adapt knowledge in the practical use of the design of Navy ships, conduct technical analysis, along with presenting and documenting technical analysis. This position will work as part of team with other engineers from different engineering groups within NNS and along with external partners or vendors. This candidate will also need to be able to effectively communicate with customers.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
• Experience and/or course work in acoustics or vibrations is preferred in order to analyze acoustic engineering issues in ship designs.
• Knowledge or experience with US Navy mechanical or fluid ship systems is highly desired, ideally a US Navy veteran with an engineering background.
• The successful candidate must be detail-oriented, and able to work in a team environment in order to achieve goals and meet timelines.
• The candidate should be a quick learner and able to apply new skills to perform acoustic analysis on new ship designs or concepts.
• Strong communication and technical writing skills will be required in order to present work to peers and customers.
• Candidate will be able to provide a quality technical review of peer’s work.
• Candidate will be a self-starter, able to work independently, and perform engineering acoustic analyses with documented rigor.
• Candidate should be able to synthesize a valid approach to a problem and present plans to peers and supervisor with minimal direction.
• Candidate has experience working with an applying MIL and industry engineering standards.
• Experience with using acoustic transfer functions, making acoustic predictions, performing acoustic or vibration testing, ship or systems engineering, and performing digital signal processing
• Working knowledge of MATLAB
• Working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis, preferably Abaqus, for structural acoustic analysis.
• Working knowledge of Statistical Energy Analysis, preferably SEAM, for structural acoustic analysis.
• Candidate should be able to learn and understand how their work impacts company business
• Candidate should have leadership skills to lead and mentor junior engineers
• DOD Secret Level Security Clearance is preferred but not required to start.
