Job Description

This senior engineering position is for the Waterfront Engineering team in the Aircraft Carrier New Construction Machinery Department supporting the design, construction, troubleshooting, testing, and in-service repair of CVN 78 Class aircraft carriers. The successful applicant should have technical knowledge with electromechanical engineering design both in-theory and hand-on.   This position will focus heavily in the areas of Advanced Weapons Elevator and Stores Elevator electro-mechanical actuators, but may branch out into other elements of these systems.  The Engineer is expected to develop/maintain an expert level of knowledge in complex, electromechanical system integration as a system owner.
 

Typical responsibilities will include:

  • System software logic and electrical schematic reading. 
     
  • Providing deckplate troubleshooting, operation, and repair efforts.
     
  • Developing, documenting, and briefing interdisciplinary teams on technical specifications, analysis, and calculations for validating system performance
     
  • Technical writing in the form of:
    • Troubleshooting procedures
    • System operation procedures
    • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports
    • Inspection Reports
    • Calculation packages (Using FEA as needed)
       
  • Interfacing with customers:  Navy, Project, Trades, Vendors
     
  • May require the applicant to go underway on commissioned Navy Vessels for periods up to and including 30 days in order to support mission-limiting troubleshooting and repair efforts.
     

Primary work location is in a shipboard environment during various stages of construction wherein temperature, humidity, and cleanliness mitigation could be minimal.

 

Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.

Basic Qualifications

5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Experience with Variable Speed Drive Design and its mechanical interfaces.  
•    Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and problem solving skills
•    Critical thinking skills
•    Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team and also independently with minimal oversight.
•    Excellent MS Office skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
•    Other software suite experience: RSLogix, Mathcad, Matlab
