The Role

Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.

 

Newport News Shipbuilding team is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual with extensive technical expertise and/or naval design, testing and analysis experience to support our acoustics program.  This leadership will focus on supporting our Newport News Shipbuilding Acoustics group in Department E46. The selected individual is expected to be fully proficient, mentor and teach other acoustic methods, advanced analysis, and testing principals for all navy programs.  Experience in modeling, analyze, tracking and perform assessments of acoustic transmission paths is key to this position and meeting requirements. 


This is a senior level position and the ideal candidate will have the following: leadership experience, collaboration and engagement with Naval Reactors (NR), Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), NAVSEA 05, Electric Boat, and other Navy technical labs and subject matter experts (SME).  Candidate should have excellent communication skills, earn respect, and clearly present technical approaches and findings both verbally and in writing. This position can expect direct engagement, travel, communication and developing a one-on-one relationship/bond with our key Navy customers, Naval Reactors, NNL, Electric Boat and Navy Warfare Centers. Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD SECRET level clearance. 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Experience and/or theoretical work in acoustics or vibrations is preferred in order to analyze acoustic engineering issues in ship designs.  Knowledge or experience with US Navy mechanical ship systems is highly desired, ideally a US Navy veteran with an engineering background.  The successful candidate must be detail-oriented, and able to work in a team environment in order to achieve goals and meet timelines.  The candidate should be a quick learner and able to apply new skills to perform acoustic analysis on new ship designs or concepts.  Candidate will be a leader, teacher, self-starter, able to work independently, and perform engineering acoustic analyses with documented rigor.  Experience with acoustic transfer functions, transmission path analysis, acoustic level predictions, acoustic or vibration testing, ship or systems engineering, use of MATLAB is a plus. Experience with analysis methods, tools and software for assessing and analyzing acoustic performance in all frequency bands.  


Demonstrated leadership and design experience in the operational/theoretical/applied/ acoustic design and maintenance of Los Angeles, Seawolf, and/or Virginia class submarines is valuable. Ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of naval nuclear propulsion plant principles of operation, maintenance, and support. Experience and/or course work in acoustics, aeroacoustics, dynamics, vibrations, and signal processing is preferred in order to assess, resolve and direct acoustic engineering solutions and improvements in ship designs.
