The Role
Designs manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling. Designs arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure most efficient and productive layout. Designs sequence of operations and specifies procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions that affect product performance. Adapts machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions. May incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan. Inspects performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality. Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control, and may develop those techniques. Provides guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques. Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.
The ideal candidate should have an understanding of current engineering processes and tools to use as a baseline for evaluating future technology, including but not limited to laser scanning hardware/software, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer-aided engineering (CAE).
The candidate should possess leadership and have strong interpersonal skills leveraging your expertise in engineering analysis, simulation, and optimization to drive improvement in the ship design, performance, and sustainability.
The candidate should be able to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with high expectations, diverse assignments and collaborative/ team settings across all levels.
Responsibilities
- Understand construction build plans, trade core competencies and trade inspection capabilities
- Perform procedure reviews to ensure content aligns with Construction build process and tolerances
- Evaluate shops dimensional inspection methodologies and standards in accordance with applicable TWD's
- Ensure data collection sheets are implemented to support construction build plans
- Standardized process requirements and develop a knowledge management model that identifies measurement barriers, risk and opportunities
- Document build strategy and capture changes for each hull
- Provide improvement Recommendations from data analytics process behavior charts and data mining out of tolerance conditions
- Predictive Analysis
- Conducting current-future state gap analysis via Value Stream Mapping and/or SIPOC Analysis
- Perform Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) reviews iaw TWD's
- Provide technical oversight and guidance of product and process to shops
- Provide assistance to Production to improve process efficiency and eliminate waste and/or rework.
- Ensuring CI efforts align with the overall NNS CI strategic direction
- Drive NSRP/ManTech project (gate reviews and milestones)
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
- Strategic and Tactical analytical abilities
- Technical knowledge of Carrier program design or construction experience
- Experience with DDMS and Blueprint reading
- Knowledgeable of Structural and Mechanical Alignment
- Experience with 3D CAD design and/or measurement software,
