The Role

This position is within Newport News Shipbuilding’s Structural URO Engineering team, specifically dealing with repair, maintenance, and overhaul of active duty submarines.  We are looking to hire a motivated individual who would like to gain engineering experience through hands-on technical support of ship construction activity.  Job responsibilities will involve technical evaluations on submarines concerning degradation of hull structure, application of industry standards, development of subsequent repair direction, and technical oversight of trade processes.  Candidates will be expected to research and interpret technical requirements, generate sound technical direction, and provide process support as work is executed on the ship. The primary area of focus will be engineering evaluation of structural inspection results to determine extent of structural degradation due to corrosion, and generation of applicable repair direction based upon requirements and specifications. Additional areas of responsibility may include engineering support for coatings and special hull treatment. It will be necessary for candidates to regularly interact with audiences ranging from craft workers in the trade to senior Engineering management, therefore strong and adaptable communication skills are required.  This position will directly support waterfront trade activities; candidate should be able and willing to split time (50/50) between the office and outside jobsites in hot / cold weather and potentially dirty industrial environments.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience. 

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

• Strong verbal and written communication skills 
• Ability to carry out practical application of engineering fundamentals
• Corrosion / Coatings experience
• Familiarity with Microsoft office applications, especially Microsoft Excel and Word
• Comfort and willingness to operate in an industrial manufacturing environment
• This position will directly support waterfront trade activities, candidate should be willing to split time (50/50) between the office and outside jobsites in hot / cold weather and potentially dirty environments
