The Role
Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
The selected candidates will be expected to function as member of the NNS Additive Manufacturing (AM) team. In this capacity the candidate will support the development of AM material qualifications, perform AM material developments, develop prototype applications, support AM part fabrication, develop part build strategies, work with various AM alloys, exercise design for AM, and support other ongoing AM projects within the organization.
The primary efforts for this individual will be in support of AM producftion efforts at NNS, work with the US Navy, and in suppport of our industrial base. The representative may also conduct/coordinate interdepartmental and/or external research efforts and/or project management activities. Responsible for project execution including project plans, communication, internal/external customer briefings, technical reviews, test plan development, production support, and various other AM related activities.
Qualification and routine use a full face respirator and/or PAPR is a requirement of this position. Laser safety training is also required for this position.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
The ideal candidate will also possess the following preferred skills:
• Practical experience in the area(s) of additive manufacturing is preferred. The best and most qualified candidate will have prior laser powder bed fusion experience obtained through hands-on work operation of the machine. Additionally, experience developing model build files, support structure strategies, and build layouts is also preferred.
• Experience with Navy Technical Publications and Requirements is preferred.
• A master’s degree in a relevant field for this position is preferred (e.g., materials, etc.)
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to clearly present technical approaches and findings
• Experience with executing all phases of an AM process is preferred (e.g., 3D design, build setup, post-processing, etc.)
• Demonstrated project management experience gained through practical and/or academic experience.
• The ability to perform technical work and/or project execution of emerging technologies, process development, test plan development, R&D, materials analysis, technical scouting, and/or complex technical analysis are anticipated.
