The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines

 

The FORD Class Hull Planning Yard (HPY) is seeking a talented and multifaceted Engineer 2 to support In-Service efforts for CVN78 Class Aircraft Carriers. As an engineer with HPY, you will play a crucial role by providing direct design, engineering and project management support to PEO Carriers, COMNAVAIRLANT, and other Navy customers.


Primary responsibilities include development of ship changes, technical feasibility studies and engineering assessments, as well as technical oversight of a team of engineers and subject matter experts. This position will oversee and manage the operational aspects of ongoing FORD Class Hull Planning Yard (HPY) projects and processes for modernization ship changes, and serve as a HPY technical liaison between management, engineers and designers, supporting the Carrier in-service community. 
 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or
Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

 

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Broad engineering knowledge of shipboard systems/components 
  • Ability to resolve technical issues in a team environment
  • Continuous interaction with various Navy customers, government ISEAs, technical warrant holders and internal NNS colleagues 
  • A strong background in CVN78 engineering processes and products to support future business growth opportunities related to HPY roles and responsibilities
  • The ability to assess project and process issues, shipboard technical inquiries and provide resolutions to meet specifications, productivity, and quality, while meeting client-satisfaction goals and objectives
  • Possess strong leadership, interpersonal and writing skills
  • Excellent communicator/presenter with a full range of personnel, including Upper Management and government personnel 
  • Prior experience with aircraft carriers, preferably Ford Class
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and direct the work of others
