The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

 

This position supports the Nuclear Engineering Department E86 which covers both Virginia Class Submarine (VCS) and Aircraft Carrier (CVN) New Construction Projects. This requisition is being posted with the intention of filling Engineer Mechanical 2 positions in various E86 groups which have structural and mechanical discipline focuses. Placement of hired candidates will be based on candidate skill set/preferences and E86 department needs. 

 

A successful candidate will possess analytical/problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during submarine/carrier construction or procurement of materials. The individual will have a working knowledge of Propulsion Plant (Reactor/Steam Plant) operations, system make-up, and major mechanical and structural components (i.e. the Primary Shield Tank). The individual shall have the communication/relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel as well as government representatives/customers and vendors. In addition, the individual will have had experience reviewing and interpreting Military Specifications, ASME/ASTM/SAE Commercial Specifications as well as valve/component technical manuals. 

 

Typical duties in this role can include the following:
1.    Performing on-site inspections of construction issues that arise during submarine/carrier construction in support of resolving Engineering Reports.
2.    Problem solving to resolve shop fabrication / deck plate installation problems with piping systems, structural assemblies, and temporary systems.  
3.    Using technical writing skills to develop and review technical work instructions which guide installation/fabrication/maintenance of complex mechanical and structural assemblies.
4.    Review, interpret and maintain construction drawings for propulsion plant construction.
5.    Collaborating with peer engineers, construction management and craftsmen on a daily basis. 
6.    Research and development of process improvement projects to reduce the build span of submarines and carriers. 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

An understanding of reactor plant and/or non-nuclear steam plant fluid systems and structural components, reactor plant and/or steam plant cleanliness, system test processes in a construction environment and experience with ship construction processes. Knowledge of the SUBSAFE program.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.  Prior experience working in industrial settings and/or waterfront experience.
