Job Description

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Specific to this position:

  • Position will report to O41 Plant Engineering Technical Services Group and be part of the Dry Docks Safety Certification Program as established in accordance with Navy Mil-STD-1625(D).
  • Candidate should have mechanical engineering experience in pumping and piping distribution systems to include performing technical evaluations and responding to emergent safety related issues in a fast paced, large industrial facility setting.
  • Responsibilities will include directing work assignments of consultants and contractors to ensure shipyard facilities are maintained in a safe condition.
  • Perform unplanned event investigations and participates in critiques when necessary.
  • Strong project management, communication, organizational and computer skills are required.
  • Supports key strategic business development and strategic initiatives as assigned and developed. Ability to complete assigned tasks on schedule and within budget is a must.

 

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years’ experience OR Master’s degree and 0 years’ experience OR PDP apprentice certificate and  1 year of engineering experience.  Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mechanical Engineering degree preferred
  • Fundamental of Engineering (FE) with progression to Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is desirable
  • CAD experience preferred
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience is desirable
