The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals or operation of product to include structures, mechanical and fixturing. Analyzes tolerances, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.

This position supports department E86 Nuclear Propulsion – Construction and Process Engineering. This position is specifically for a Mechanical Engineer supporting the E86 Structural and Shielding group of the Virginia Class Submarine program.  This Engineer will provide hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support and oversight for the construction of Reactor Plant structures.

Key responsibilities will be,

  1. Technical Rigor
  • Become a structural discipline SME within the technical content of the group.
  • Resolve and review discrepancies in a technically sound method.
  • Develop new SOPs to capture processes as needed
  • Revise existing SOPs to reflect improvements in processes
  1. Communication
  • Perform as liaison between various Engineering & Trades departments and the customer.
  • Attend and support meetings regarding Reactor Plant structures
  • Provide timely resolutions to waterfront and shop issues.
  1. Leadership
  • Develop and manage timelines and priorities for known upcoming milestones/key-events.
  • Teach/guide junior engineers in their development

A strong candidate should be effective in written and verbal communication; Problem Solving; Critical Thinking; Technical Writing; and have experience with Microsoft Office Programs.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

  • A general understanding of the reactor plant construction process, comprehension of structural drawings, and project management experience.
  • Experience with NDT standards as well as welding standards.
  • Experience with various NNS shipbuilding programs (i.e. Teamcenter, SAP, i2, CATIA, etc.) preferred.
