Job Description

This senior engineering position is for the E24 Deck Machinery Engineering team in the Aircraft Carrier New Construction project supporting the design, construction, troubleshooting, testing, and in-service repair of CVN 78 Class aircraft carriers. The successful applicant should have technical knowledge with mechanical engineering design both in-theory and hands-on.   This position will focus heavily on deck machinery systems including Weapons Elevators, Aircraft Elevators, and Hull Closures.   The incumbent is expected to have in depth experience with analytical methods for analyzing machinery systems. 


Typical responsibilities will include: 

  • Developing, documenting, and briefing interdisciplinary teams on technical specifications, analysis, and calculations for validating system performance
  • Technical writing in the form of:
    • Troubleshooting procedures
    • System operation procedures
    • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports
    • Inspection Reports
    • Calculation packages
  • Providing deckplate troubleshooting and issue resolution for complex shipboard systems.
  • Interfacing with customers:  Navy, Project, Trades, Vendors


Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Basic Qualifications

5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert FEA Experience (FEMAP, Abaqus)
  • Knowledge of machining processes and experience with complex weldments
  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and problem solving skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team and also independently with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent MS Office skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Other software suite experience: Autodesk Products (Inventor, AutoCAD), MATLAB, MathCAD.
