The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

 

This position is for a senior level mechanical engineer in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting the maintenance, overhaul and modernization of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers. This position will involve taking a leadership role in the E83 Pipe Stress Group within the section. Major duties will involve providing technical and project oversight for the performance of pipe stress analysis in support of modernization and maintenance of CVN68 Class ships. 

 

 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

  • Extensive experience with research, design, project management, and overall general problem solving related to maintaining naval reactor plant fluid systems.
  • History of resolving complex problems with limited supervision while effectively communicating with all levels of management and external customers.
  • Ability to train and mentor others and to coordinate multiple tasks successfully.
  • Firm understanding of the piping analysis requirements within the applicable sections of the CVN68 Class Ship Specifications, Structural Design Basis-63, the General Specifications for Overhaul of Surface Ships (GSO), and the General Reactor Plant Overhaul and Repair Specification.
  • An understanding and experience in applying the provisions of Piping Design Basis-46, the Naval Shipboard Piping Structural Design Manual, and ASME Piping System Design Codes in resolving piping issues.
  • Experience with CVN68 Class reactor plant piping arrangements, piping design references, pipe hanger designs and applications, piping repair doubler sleeve design, fatigue assessments, and shock requirements for piping.
  • Experience in the use of TRIFLEX® and the NNS Pipe IV programs in performing pipe stress analysis. 
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), project management skills, and demonstrated ability to work independently and in groups with only minimal oversight from management.
