The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.


 
The Advanced Propulsion team is seeking a highly skilled and experienced technical leader to influence the development of the next generation of fast attack submarines.  This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the design of innovative components and systems, enhancing capabilities, performance, and maintainability.  As a technical leader on the design team, the successful candidate will provide technical oversight and guidance throughout the design process for propulsion plant fluid systems and components.  The ideal candidate will have an understanding of the design life cycle, from concept design through detail design and manufacturing/construction, with a background in propulsion plant systems integration.  The successful candidate will have the ability to build strong relationships across stakeholders of the naval nuclear enterprise, as collaboration on design products is vital to the role's success.  Additionally, experience with and the ability to develop relationships with the supply base is critical to ensure seamless integration of components and systems, and to maintain a strong network of partnerships that support the project's objectives.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

  • Specific knowledge of submarine propulsion plant design, with additional knowledge of CVN 68 Class and CVN 78 Class designs
  • Direct technical expertise in propulsion plant fluid system design or component design including heat exchangers, valves, pumps, generators, and steam turbines
  • Proficient in technical writing.  You will be responsible for the deliverables associated with your system/component, and support the review of peer's deliverables
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for providing frequent briefs to leadership at NNS and external parties
  • Operational experience on commissioned or under-construction Navy vessels
  • Experience with and the ability to develop relationships with Electric Boat and the supply base is critical for successful collaboration and project execution
