The Role

This position supports department E86 Nuclear Propulsion – Construction and Process Engineering. The department has opportunities in new construction for aircraft carriers, Virginia Class Submarines, Columbia Class submarines, and process engineering. This position is for the Nuclear Liaison Engineer who provides hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support and oversight for the construction and final assembly of the Reactor Plant and supporting systems. Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Evaluates and resolves engineering related production problems related to manufacturing, design, quality and material engineering. Analyzes engineering specifications and drawings; confers with quality, material, manufacturing and subcontractors to provide and obtain technical information; investigates reports of defective, damaged or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment or systems; and reviews production schedules and orders. Examines, measures, inspects or tests defective parts for conformance. 

 

A successful candidate to possess analytical/problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during construction. Communication/relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel. In addition, the individual will be willing to provide hands-on support on the deck plate. 

Typical duties in this role include the following:

  • Provide on-site support for construction/fabrication issues that arise during submarine construction.
  • Mentor and train level 1 and 2 engineers as well as lead teams of personnel with varying backgrounds and experience levels.
  • Problem solving of shop fabrication / deck plate installation problems. 
  • Maintain and approve work instructions such as procedures and troubleshooting paperwork.
  • Review, interpret and maintain construction drawings for Reactor Plant systems and components (fabrication, assembly, and installation).
  • Collaborating with peer engineers, construction management and craftsmen on a daily basis. 
  • Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.
  • Evaluates findings to formulate corrective actions. Provide technical solutions to a wide range of complex difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

 

Nice to Have

  • A comprehensive understanding of the reactor plant construction process, ship/shop check experience, and project management experience. Effective written and verbal communication skills; Problem Solving; Critical Thinking; Technical Writing. Experience with Microsoft Office Programs and various NNS shipbuilding programs (i.e. Teamcenter, SAP, i2, etc.)
  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.
