Job Description

This position will serve as the Ship Design Manager for the Columbia program. This position will be challenged with leading and representing engineering in waterfront construction support by attending daily test and construction meetings. The successful candidate will act independently to perform technical planning and system leadership in multiple engineering disciplines. Responsibilities include the following Technical and Management aspects:


Technical aspects:
•    Leads and representing engineering in waterfront construction support by attending daily test and construction meetings. 
•    Acts independently to perform technical planning and system leadership in multiple engineering disciplines. 
•    Ensures customer functional and technical requirements are reflected in design solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
•    Aids in development of recovery plans 
•    Leadership and coordination at all levels of construction including: risk management, vendor interface, qualification, fabrication, installation, test, operation and troubleshooting.

 

Management aspects:
•    Serves as organization spokesperson on the operational aspects of ongoing projects and serves as liaison between management and customers, which include but are not limited to planning, construction, test government, Navy and vendors.
•    Serves as the focal point for all engineering activities on a program and the key point of contact for internal customers (e.g., VP Programs, program managers).
•    Oversees program execution and planning activities, with inputs from project and functional managers, and ensures their timely completion of tasks. 
•    Reports out on engineering program performance to a variety of internal stakeholders (e.g., VP E&D, VP Programs, and Director Programs).
•    Monitors spending and progressing.
•    Monitors metrics for product cost and product quality. 
•    Runs internal agenda meetings to maintain status of work to ensure schedule adherence (drawings, CR/CN, VWI, Construction Hold Ups, etc.).

 

Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Basic Qualifications

14 Years with Bachelors in Science; 12 Years with Masters; 9 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

Engineering and Design experience including but not limited to familiarity with Columbia Planning and Construction.
