The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Serve as the lead with respect to identifying and implementing design/producibility/build strategy improvements/modifications for CVN 80 and follow ships to reduce costs and improve the construction/test schedule.
• Provide oversight/guidance on significant issues associated with material, design, fabrication, vendor compliance, etc. that are impacting the Propulsion Plant critical path schedule 
• Serve as the SME on specifications, processes, and controls used in the construction and testing of the CVN 78 Class Propulsion Plant.
• Represent E86 at Program Reviews, construction management meetings, etc. as needed to provide updates on issues impacting the Propulsion Plant. 
• Serve as the E86 lead for the Division of Responsibility (DOR) document and transitioning traditional Shipbuilder activities from the PPPY to E86.
• Serve as the E86 representative on the CVN 78 Class Technical Review Board (TRB).
• Ensure lessons learned are shared among similar platforms. Lead department wide improvement initiatives wrt technical products and TWDs.
• Special projects.

Must Have

Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience 
Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

 

Nice to Have

• Experience working independently at a high level while having significant involvement and drive to work on multiple concurrent tasks with multiple cognizant levels of management or lead engineers
• The ability to understand propulsion plant construction issues and lead a team to arrive at a solution   
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills  
• Able to aid in developing schedules for individual engineering/design/construction tasks and drive projects to completion
• Able to provide clear direction for intra- and inter-department personnel to meet schedule needs and represent the organization on project/construction issues   
• Knowledge of CVN 78 propulsion plant systems  
• Ability to translate issues into white papers/presentations for all levels of NNS management and customers (external and internal)  
• Ability to apply engineering principles, theories and concepts, and work on complex engineering problems and provide solutions
