The Role
Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
Ability to self-initiate assignments based on observed needs, to make decisions, and to provide and implement recommendations that are critical to achieving NNPP and NNS objectives.
History of performing duties while being largely self-directed and without significant supervision.
Proficiency balancing safety, quality, cost, and schedule.
Ability to work within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program system boundaries while also questioning and moving those boundaries to meet greater NNPP objectives.
Must Have
Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
- The ideal candidate will be effective at all aspects of project management, including oversight, schedule development and control, spending, and communication.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple efforts simultaneously.
- History of elevating team performance, including peers and less senior people.
- Experience with the design, operation, and troubleshooting of fluid systems.
- Experience leading engineers and designers executing complex projects in reactor plants.
- Knowledge of and experience with piping systems, fluid flow, pumps, valves and other components, corrosion, FEA, laboratory testing, and shipboard and waterfront environments.
- Navy experience and nuclear/propulsion test experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with formal and informal communication with the Naval Nuclear Laboratory/Bettis, multiple NAVSEA 08 codes, BPMI, shipyards, and vendors.
- Demonstrated success as a leader, mentor, navigator, etc.
- Demonstrated success as a leader of collaborative, cross-functional efforts requiring both internal and external coordination.
- Demonstrated experience applying the Naval Reactors Program Principles.
- Demonstrated history of commitment to continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated history of driving efficiency, via administrative and process improvements.
