The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

E86 Nuclear Propulsion - Construction and Process Enginering Department is in need of an Engineer Project 5. This position will support continuous improvement for the Nuclear Propulsion Division (NPD) and Nuclear Construction Engineering (E86) department within NNS. Key responsibilities for NPD include response development for significant nuclear problems and audit findings, identification of trends involving nuclear engineering and construction, and development of the NNS self-assessment submitted annually to NAVSEA 08. Key responsibilities for E86 include department performance metrics and quarterly self-assessment development, training program improvement and administration, Team Learning Session (TLS) facilitation and report development, and creation of knowledge sharing products to prevent future problems. This position requires a broad knowledge of NNS departments and nuclear processes, requirements, and operations. It also requires significant experience with technical and creative writing, facilitation, project management, and data analysis.

Must Have

Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience
Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Effective written and verbal communication skills; Problem Solving; Critical Thinking; Technical Writing. Experience with Microsoft Office Programs and various NNS shipbuilding programs (i.e. DDMS, SAP, i2, etc.)

Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams of personnel with varying backgrounds and experience levels.
