The Role

Researches, develops, designs, and/or tests components, equipment, systems, and networks in one or more engineering disciplines. May design equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes. Applies engineering principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

 

This position is for an Engineer Project 5, with emphasis on an Electromechanical skillset.  Expectations include applying electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.  The position is located within the Valve Engineering section of Department E50 (Propulsion and Reactor Engineering Planning Yard).  This is a leadership position that requires an individual with expert level knowledge in electro-mechanical (and electrical engineering) valve and actuator operation, software knowledge, and the ability to lead less experienced personnel that do not have the requisite experience.  Furthermore, this is a leadership position that will involve project management, and mentorship. Specifically, they will have responsibilities with motor operated valve and actuator designs for CVN78 class ships and some support for existing CVN68 Class actuator designs.  Responsibilities include cognizance of multiple motor operated valve and actuator designs that include Permanent Magnet Motor Electro-Mechanical Actuators and Electro-Mechanical Actuator development projects.  These actuators, and more developments expected going forward, have integrated mechanical, electrical and software characteristics.  To be successful in designing, maintaining and troubleshooting them will require a high degree of knowledge in all three fields and how those areas interact with each other.  To be successful, additional experience that would be helpful includes:  
•    CVN78 Class valve and actuator experience 
•    Extensive Electrical and Mechanical engineering and software knowledge
•    Experience working with Supply Chain Management and actuator vendors to develop new designs to support new construction ships.

Must Have

Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience 
Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

This leadership position will require the candidate to fulfill several tasking areas including:
•    Working on unusually complex technical problems with motors and valve actuators and providing innovative solutions 
•    Support developing new vendors for valve actuators
•    Support development of the Electro-mechanical Actuator (EMA) that will be used on future Carriers
•    Interacting with actuator and valve vendors regarding qualification and delivery
•    Supporting other programs as needed, CVN68 Class actuators
•    Coordinating fluid systems and electrical component sections to implement successful modernization and technology insertion, as well as troubleshoot issues
•    Serving as the department spokesperson on electric motor and permanent motor actuator issues and developments and advising  management and customers on advanced technical topics
•    Occasionally developing and presenting reports, letters and information to broad audiences that is logical and accurate
•    Electric Circuit design with knowledge of the different components and their functionality within the circuit
•    Printed Circuit Boards with knowledge on the design and manufacturing processes
•    Knowledge of different types of gears, greases and materials with a focus on their respective advantages and disadvantages
•    Motor design and functionality; both induction and permanent motor
•    Ability to code not required, but would be advantageous
•    Previous New Construction testing experience
•    Previous experience as part of a new design development project, inclusive of firsthand knowledge of Navy procurement specification creation and component qualification testing requirements
