The Role
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
E12 Hull Tech Engineering is seeking a motivated Structural Engineer to join the Submarine Structural Team. The selected candidate will help investigate and resolve issues on the Los Angeles (SSN-688), Seawolf, and Virginia Class Submarines. This role involves researching historical engineering records, connecting current structural problems to past solutions, and developing tailored recommendations that ensure the integrity of the fleet.
Key Responsibilities:
• Review and interpret engineering problems related to Submarine Shells, Hulls, and Decks as well as their respective constituents.
• Research legacy Design Data, Calculations, Drawings, and Technical Reports to find relevant historical solutions.
• Assist in developing technical recommendations based on analysis and prior design experience.
• Willing or able to Learn and apply Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to model and justify structural responses if necessary.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and other disciplines to deliver sound, well-supported solutions.
• Ability to obtain a security clearance.

Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Use and/or application of technical principles, theories, and concepts. Demonstrates the skill and ability to perform professional tasks.
Develops recommended solutions to technical problems as assigned.
Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy. Works under general supervision.
Contributes to the completion of assigned technical tasks. Failure to achieve results should be detected in supervisory oversight.
Contacts are primarily with immediate supervisor, project leaders, and other professionals in the section or group.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Interest in Submarines or ship structures and willingness to learn complex legacy systems.
Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for research and continuous learning.
Familiarity with (or desire to learn) FEA tools such as FEMAP/Nastran.
