The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

This position is part of the Newport News Shipbuilding Nuclear Reactor Servicing Engineering group, responsible for providing design and engineering support to service Navy nuclear reactors. This position is with our Engineering Design team responsible for Electrical, Structural, Mechanical and Fluid engineering design of variety of nuclear reactor servicing equipment and systems.  
The group’s main responsibilities include:
1.    Design and modification: Designing and modifying temporary tools, equipment, and gear to support the Trades.
2.    Analysis reports: Writing analysis reports that compare calculated stresses to allowable stresses.
3.    Collaboration with designers: Working with designers to create and change drawings to match calculated information.
4.    Structural and mechanical design: Performing structural and mechanical design work, with a focus on temporary tools and equipment.
5.    Fluids and ventilation calculations: Occasionally performing fluids and ventilation calculations to support the group’s work.

Reactor Servicing Engineering is well suited for any engineering discipline to include Mechanical and Structural. Reactor Servicing – Excellence at the Core.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

.Strong foundation in structural and/or mechanical design engineering standards and practices (AISC Structural Design Standards and similar)
2. Knowledgeable of NAVSEA Special Purpose Service Lifting and Handling Standards 
3. Preferred proficiency with AutoDesk Inventor
4. Preferred experience with Siemens FEMAP Finite Element Analysis software (or similar FEA)
5. Preferred to have knowledge of RES-66, RIM-63 and similar GFE Design manuals
6. Preferred experience with MathCAD
7.Preferred Hands-on experience working with machine tools and equipment.
8.Preferred knowledge and experience with welding techniques and processes.
9.Preferred ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment and tools.
10.Experience reading fabrication drawings: Ability to interpret and understand fabrication drawings and diagrams.
11. Preferred familiarity with working with steel and/or aluminum materials.
12.Knowledge and experience with performing stress calculations and analysis.
