The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

 

This position is for a senior level structural engineer (E4) in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting the maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers.  The candidate will lead various efforts in the arena of Ship Alteration development, structural foundation design, nuclear lifting and handling, robotic inspection techniques, and the maintenance of nuclear cognizant structure.  


The candidate will have comprehensive knowledge regarding the development of both nuclear and non-nuclear structural ship alteration products as well as their execution by the maintenance activities.  Direct experience in this area for CVN68 Class ships is preferred as well as first-hand knowledge of ship arrangements.  The candidate requires experience in structural foundation drawings, the fabrication and welding of ship's structure, and non-destructive test requirements for structural welds.  The individual must have extensive experience working with nuclear lifting and handling requirements.  This includes a demonstrated proficiency with the development of associated component handling procedures and calculation methodologies.  Additionally, the ability to support the CVN68 Class operational readiness through adjudication of LARs and other special studies requires efficient work processes, ingenuity, and exceptional communication.  Knowledge of protective coatings, corrosion prevention mechanisms, and nuclear shielding is also preferred. 


It is intended that this person will oversee larger projects as described above and provide oversight and direction for less experienced engineers in these areas.  The individual must possess strong leadership skills, as well as project management, communications, and writing skills.  The candidate will also be expected to mentor junior engineers and develop / execute training objectives that will support their growth to fill these leadership roles in the future.  The candidate will be a self-starter, highly motivated, and capable of task execution with only general direction.  The candidate will be able to develop technical solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.  

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Sound knowledge of engineering/design processes relating to Navy ship systems and an understanding of ship construction processes
Demonstrate the ability to work independently and in groups with only minimal oversight from management
