Job Description

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

Specific to this position:

Candidate will support lead structural engineer with directing work assignments for plant engineers, consultants, maintenance personnel and contractors to ensure shipyard facilities and structures (i.e. dry docks, piers, buildings, roads, bridges, etc) are maintained in a safe condition. Responsibilities include providing facilities related technical services support with technical data, studies, condition assessments, and regulatory code compliance assistance/interpretation. Supports the entire shipyard concerning structural issues, safety issues and equipment repairs by providing engineering guidance. Prepares impact studies and makes recommendations for future capital replacement and day-to-day maintenance initiatives. Supports key strategic business development and strategic initiatives as assigned and developed. Candidate will be required to manage projects and serve as System Engineer for assigned areas, troubleshoot civil/structural issues, develop long range strategic plan for shipyard, participate in the development of planned maintenance requirements, support resolution of unplanned events and participate in project implementation process for system related projects. A thorough understanding of applicable codes along with experience in troubleshooting and root cause analysis is required. Candidate will need to be customer focused, have strong communication skills and mentor young engineers on staff. Strong leadership, project management, organizational skills and computer skills are essential.

Basic Qualifications

9 Years with Bachelors in Science; 7 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred.
  • Structural design (steel, concrete, masonry, wood) experience of buildings and other structures is desirable.
  • Knowledge of National Building Codes, ADA and OSHA regulations is also preferred as well as Heavy industrial facilities experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with contractors, maintenance personnel, engineers, and senior management.
