The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

This position is for the Submarine Shock Associate Technical Fellow (ATF) E5 to serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for submarine shock both internally within NNS and externally within the greater Navy technical community.

The prospective candidate must have a broad understanding and experience in the application of shock principals in the generation, transmission, and mitigation of shock and vibration analysis results. Candidates should have an understanding of structure coupling and its effects on shock and vibration mitigation. Expertise in shock analysis methods is required, including but not limited to transient shock analysis (TSA). Candidates must have extensive knowledge of associated software (ABAQUS, FEMAP, or other specialized commercial or government developed analysis software) for shock analysis in all frequency ranges.  Candidates must also have experience relating to analytical processes for shipboard systems, associated structure, foundations and system components.  

The prospective candidate will serve as the company’s technical authority on submarine shock and advanced analytics issues affecting the design and construction of shipboard systems, structures and associated components.  This individual will act as a key technical advisor to management and may serve as the spokesperson when interfacing with the Customer on key technical issues.  This individual will serve as the Company’s representative on related technical conferences and collaborative efforts with both industry and academia.  Additionally, this individual may serve as a consultant to senior management in long-range company planning efforts concerning new or projected areas of technological research and advancements, particularly in advanced submarine or underwater vehicle design.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant professional experience; Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of relevant professional experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

• Experience participating on national technical committees (e.g. SAVE, etc.)
• The ability to influence outside organizations (PMS, PEO, NAVSEA, NSWCCD, NUWC, SOS, ONR) that have a direct impact or drive requirements on relevant products
• The ability to operate independently with minimal oversight in support of long term strategic objectives
• While the candidate will be assigned to a specific engineering program, it is expected that they will devote a significant portion of their time to providing guidance and oversight for unique/complex problems across all programs and IRAD projects  
• Candidate will apply comprehensive technical principles and advanced knowledge of finite element and related analytical methodologies to address unique or complex shock related issues or requests across all programs
• Resolution of complex shock related issues may require development of unique analytical approaches and/or laboratory testing
• Candidate will serve as the Company’s representative in this subject area and will have outstanding written and verbal communication skills
