The Role

This position is for a Ship Survivability (Vulnerability Reduction) Associate Technical Fellow (ATF) Engineer 5 to serve as a subject matter expert (SME) both internally within NNS and externally within the greater Navy technical community.

 

The prospective candidate must have an understanding and experience with structural survivability systems incorporated in the design of aircraft carriers used to reduce ship vulnerability from AIREX and UNDEX weapons effects. Candidates must have an understanding of survivability requirements and threats for aircraft carriers, including the key areas of weapons effects, passive protection technology, and vulnerability reduction for U.S. Navy ships as well as the requirements for damage stability and separation/redundancy of vital systems. Expertise in security requirements involving structural survivability systems invoked by the individual ship contracts is required.

 

The prospective candidate will serve as the company’s technical authority on ship survivability affecting the design and construction of passive protection systems and structures for both NIMITZ and FORD class carriers. This individual will act as a key technical advisor to management and may serve as the spokesperson when interfacing with various customers on key survivability issues. The prospective candidate will set the analytical standards and training standards to support the development of critical skills and mentoring of future associates in ship survivability.

 

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Provide technically sound solutions for unique or complex problems.
  • Successfully interact with and influence outside organizations (NAVSEA, PMS, PEO, NSWCCD, SOS, Public Shipyards) that have a direct impact or drive requirements on relevant systems and products.
  • Operate independently with minimal oversight in support of long term strategic objectives.
  • The candidate will be assigned to a specific engineering program, and they will devote a significant portion of their time to providing guidance and oversight for unique/complex problems across all programs and IRAD projects.  
  • Apply comprehensive technical principles and advanced knowledge of structural survivability systems, damage stability, separation and redundancy, passive protection systems, and the related analytical methodologies to address unique or complex issues or requests across all programs related to these technical principles.
  • Resolution of these issues may require development of unique analytical approaches and/or laboratory testing. This position requires expertise that is recognized within the Navy and NNS technical community.
  • Will possess or be able to establish a working level relationship with the equivalent NAVSEA Tech Warrant Holder.
  • Will possess or be able to obtain a DOD Top Secret Security Clearance.
  • Will have superior written and verbal communication skills as they will serve as the Company’s representative in this subject area.
