Job Description

Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for a Structural Engineer 5 to join their team.  This individual will serve as the Company’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) for structural Lifting & Handling (L&H) and structural fixtures design and construction requirements, perform research/analytical tasks on highly complex projects while providing technical leadership/direction to others for specific engineering projects/programs, provide guidance/assistance/direction to others performing engineering analyses within Department E22 and across Engineering and Design (E&D), serve as a mentor to supervisors/engineers to develop their knowledge, technical skills and expertise, provide written reports/presentations detailing the results/analyses and/or studies performed, manage multiple projects simultaneously prioritizing work to meet cost, schedule and quality objectives, and serve as a L&H subject matter expert for NAVSEA and SOS.    


Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

Basic Qualifications

14 Years with Bachelors in Science; 12 Years with Masters; 9 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The candidate should have broad based expert technical knowledge of L&H and fixture design/specifications and construction practices and be able to apply advanced technical principles, theories and concepts for developing innovative and cost effective technical solutions to meet defined L&H objectives and deliverables.  
  • Possess superior written and verbal communication skills as well as be able to serve as a mentor to supervisors/engineers to develop their knowledge, technical skills and expertise.  
  • The candidate will work closely with hull structure personnel understanding and evaluating impacts of build sequence, outsourcing and construction changes on structure and outfitting.  
  • This candidate will report directly to the E22 Department manager and will support the Company’s Principle Structural Engineer in the CHENG’s Office.
