The Role

NNS is seeking an experienced Lead Digital Engineer (Engineer Systems 5) to spearhead carrier digital engineering initiatives at Newport News Shipbuilding. This senior-level role involves distributing work to other team members, ensuring alignment with project objectives, and maintaining clear communication with key stakeholders, including the U.S. Navy.


Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.


- Lead digital engineering efforts, including the development and implementation of digital models, simulations, and data-driven systems.
- Assign tasks and workloads to junior engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and oversight to ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Communicate project progress, milestones, and challenges to the Navy and other stakeholders through reports, presentations, and meetings.
- Drive initiatives to meet project objectives, timelines, and performance metrics while adhering to budgetary constraints.
- Apply expertise in the shipbuilding design processes to iteratively refine system designs, incorporating feedback and evolving requirements.
- Utilize model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies to create, maintain, and evolve system models that support lifecycle management.
- Facilitate the connection and integration of digital data across platforms, tools, and teams to enable seamless collaboration and decision-making.
- Identify and resolve complex technical problems, employing innovative solutions to overcome obstacles.
- Foster a collaborative team environment, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master's Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 9 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the shipbuilding design processes, Model Based Engineering (MBe), and digital data integration, combined with exceptional problem-solving and communication skills.  This person will help coordinate new construction design disclosure deliverables and In-service maintenance and modernization development items.  This person will help define the requirements for COMET (the cloud based method of delivery for Ford Class Carriers design data) and ensure that the public shipyards have the training and processes to leverage the 3D Carrier product model using Siemens TC and NX.
