The Role
Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.
This position is intended for the VCS Test Group within Department E25. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting integrated mechanical systems testing on Virginia Class Submarines, including system activation, lineup verification, operational checks, and performance validation under test conditions. Responsibilities include diagnosing system level issues across pumps, valves, actuators, hydraulic components, seawater systems, chilled water systems, and auxiliary machinery by analyzing pressure, flow, vibration, noise, and equipment response data. The role requires identifying abnormal system behavior, isolating mechanical or functional discrepancies, validating system interfaces, and confirming correct operation within the full shipboard test environment. The incumbent will maintain configuration control during test evolutions, document test results and deficiencies, coordinate troubleshooting actions, and work with Engineering, Production, Planning, and technical vendors to resolve issues impacting system readiness. Regular communication occurs with Navy test personnel and waterfront teams through email, phone, and in person meetings. Daily work includes utilizing Microsoft Office, Teamcenter, engineering databases, and Test Engineering documentation systems to support system testing, discrepancy tracking, and certification readiness.
Must Have
Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience
One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:
- NNS Apprentice School graduate
- Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
- High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
- High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
Nice to Have
Knowledge
• Understanding of shipboard mechanical and auxiliary systems
• Familiarity with rotating equipment, alignment practices, and vibration evaluation
• Knowledge of lubrication, cleanliness, and mechanical integrity standards
• Working understanding of WAF processes and shipboard test coordination
Skills
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and fault‑diagnosis skills
• Ability to perform equipment alignment, startup, and functional checks
• Ability to read mechanical drawings, P&IDs, system diagrams, and technical documentation
• Clear, accurate technical documentation and communication skills
Abilities
• Lead small teams during system activation or troubleshooting events
• Navigate shipboard structures and perform physically demanding tasks
Education
• Associate’s degree in a technical field (preferred)
• Equivalent military training (e.g., Machinist Mate) or apprenticeship
Experience
• Hands‑on operation or maintenance of mechanical/shipboard systems
• Background in functional testing, inspections, and readiness verification
• Experience collaborating with Engineering, Production, and vendors for repairs or test resolution
