Job Description
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is offering a $500 sign-on bonus to TRADE Trainee hires. Job seekers who apply before April 1, 2023 are eligible for the sign-on bonus. Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. Courses are offered once a month with 8-10 students per class. The Fitter Trainee program is offered at Paul D. Camp Community College (Suffolk, VA), Thomas Nelson Community College (Hampton, VA) and Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA). This is a 3-week (UNPAID) program (120 hours), 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Monday thru Friday).

Fitters are often called “carpenters of steel.” Fitters weld ship ceilings, floors, hulls and walls. Experience in carpentry, construction and mechanics lends itself to a career as a Fitter.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates must be able to work at extreme heights or small confined spaces. Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb. Must be able to lift 40 lbs and must take and pass a respirator fit test. Must be able to work assigned shift as production needs. Must be able to pass Physical Ablities test
