Job Description

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is offering a $1500 sign-on bonus to Machinist new hires, with a minimum 3 years experience. In addition, NNS is offering $1000 in relocation to experienced Machinist new hires that live 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. The sign-on bonus is for external new hires only. Current Newport News Shipbuilding employees are ineligible.
Machinists operate various machines (manual and/or CNC) such as; lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, horizontal boring mills, etc. Machinists troubleshoot operations and take appropriate actions to correct. The machinists perform quality inspections, verifying dimensions of work piece are in accordance with drawing specifications. Machinists are assigned responsibility for installing, grooming and testing the ship’s major mechanical components and systems. Work occurs on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul or repair. Examples of ship’s components work on are steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes and can be as diverse as laundry, food service or refrigeration equipment. Machinist operate a wide variety of tools and machinery. The tools range from wrenches and screwdrivers to complex and sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, instruments and lathes.

Basic Qualifications
The candidate must be able to understand written instructions and strong math skills are essential. This is a construction environment involving extreme heights, confined spaces, physical labor and various weather conditions within a shipyard environment. Entry level candidates must pass Work keys testing requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair is a plus. Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.
Qualified candidates must have three (3) or more years experience as a machinist, machinist mate, mechanic/automotive repairman, engine man, heavy equipment repairman or similar experience. Machinists take the locating information and applied mathematics tests."

- Machinist will set up, program, edit , troubleshoot own machines
- CNC machinist experience in programming, setup , modifying programs, knowledge of vast tooling ( Kennametal , Iscar, sandvik ,mitsubitishi )
- High speed drilling, milling and turning

- Gibbs cam programming software
