This Job Listing is for recent or upcoming 2023 High School Graduates. Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is offering a $1000 sign-on bonus to Trade Trainee hires. In addition, Newport News Shipbuilding is offering $ 1,000 in relocation bonus to Trade Trainee new hires that live 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. Job seekers who apply until August 1, 2023, are eligible for the sign-on bonus and relocation bonus. Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. Courses are offered once a month with 8-10 students per class. The Marine Coating Trainee program is offered at Tidewater Community College (Norfolk, VA). This is a 2-week (UNPAID) program (80 hours), 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Monday thru Friday).

The candidate will remove, repair, and install various types of insulation, including fiberglass, calcium silicate, and Rubatex from piping systems, ventilation systems, and various components and structures throughout the ship. Candidate must have the ability to lift 40 lbs., climb, crawl, bend, squat, and stand for up to 8 hours per day, and work in various work environments.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates must able to work at extreme heights or small confined spaces. Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb. Must be able to lift 40 lbs and must take and pass a respirator fit test. Must be able to work assigned shift as production needs. Must be able to pass Physical Agility Test. 

Preferred Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent preferred. Must be able to work indoors/outdoors year round in all weather conditions.
