The Role
This position is for a new Manager Design Engineering 1 role for Submarine Engineering – Advanced Capabilities Team in Department E35, specifically the Platform side, which is exclusive of the Propulsion Plant (PP) design of our nation’s next Fast Attack Submarine, SSN(X). The successful candidate will lead a cross-functional team of Designers from multiple disciplines (hull, mechanical, electrical, piping and structure) as related to platform systems and operations for R&D, concept, and detail design of platform component arrangements and structures within the spaces of SSN(X). The candidate will interface with NNS Managers, Engineers, Program Office representatives, and other management supporting the design development of SSN(X). The candidate will also interface with external managers, designers and engineers from Electric Boat Corp and customers such as NUWC and NAVSEA.
Daily Responsibilities Include:
•Design major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing
operation
•Develop basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal
•Investigate pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace
ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost
•Coordinate with other organizations affected by design development
•Make layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures
•Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning
•Identify design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to
responsible engineers or designers
Must Have
Design Apprentice certification or Associate's degree in Design with 6 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus 4 years of applicable, progressive professional and/or supervisory work experience;
or a Master's degree in a relevant discipline and 2 years of applicable experience.
Nice to Have
•Experience in arranging Submarine platform systems, component arrangements and spaces, knowledge of electrical wire-way and
piping runs for the connection of the arranged components as well as general knowledge of Submarine decks, tanks and
foundations
•Knowledge and experience with multiple Submarine platforms systems and other Navy platforms for contrast is preferred as well as demonstrated experience in leading technical teams, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to develop lasting working relationships across organization
