The Role

The SSN(X) Platform Machinery team is looking for a strong team leader to support the development of the next generation fast attack submarine.  This is an exciting, once in a generation opportunity to get in at the beginning of an innovative and novel submarine design.  You will join a strong, diverse team of engineers teaming with the Navy and industry to influence the critical functions and capabilities of what will become the world's most advanced and capable submarine.

This platform machinery team will be responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex machinery systems, including payload handling, launch, and recovery; towed systems; sail machinery; and other systems in the non-propulsion plant areas of the submarine.  The candidate will be responsible for the technical oversight and leadership of a team of engineers.  In this role they will be responsible for helping guide the development of innovative new designs, providing technical leadership and mentorship of the team, coordinating with Navy counterparts and NNS management, managing task budgets and staffing levels, and the oversight of their team.
The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background with a comprehensive knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical ship systems from the concept stage, through manufacture and first article testing.  They will be a team facilitator with strong communication skills, helping to inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals.  They will foster a positive and collaborative work environment in their team.  They will establish and reflect an expectation for first time quality in the products their team produces.
The position may require periodic travel to naval bases and facilities, ship visits, vendors, other NNS facilities or conferences.
