The Role

This position is part of the Newport News Shipbuilding Nuclear Reactor Servicing Engineering group, responsible for providing design and engineering support to service Navy nuclear reactors. Reactor Servicing Engineering offers a challenging, high paced, team environment with opportunity to excel and endless possibilities for professional growth. This position is with the Reactor Services Engineering Design team responsible for Electrical, Structural, Mechanical and Fluid engineering design of variety of nuclear reactor servicing equipment and systems.   Reactor Servicing Engineering is well suited for any engineering discipline to include General Engineering, Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, Systems, Industrial, Nuclear, and others. Reactor Servicing – Excellence at the Core.

 

Team responsibilities include:

• A4WR Reactor Plant Design Engineering for shipboard cranes, lifting and handling devices, platforms, fixtures and safety devices
• VCS design engineering support for Power Unit Shipping Container and Power Unit Lifts.  
• Rigging Sketch program for all fuel handling programs for Special Purpose Service lifts
• Misc. design engineering support for other NPD departments including E81 and E86. 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design or

Master's Degree and 4 years of relevant experience.


Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of A4W Refueling processes and reactor design
• Knowledge of RES-66 GFE design criteria, including brittle fracture
• Knowledgeable in Crane and Rigging design, including CMAA-70, BTH-1, ASME-NOG-1 and similar
• Proficiency with various forms of fastening including bolting, welding and others, to include .  
• Comprehensive understanding of various forms of manufacturability to support detail design reviews
• Knowledge of structural analysis programs such as RISA 3D or STAAD Pro.  
• Knowledge in PTC Mathcad and/or Mathcad Prime
• Proficient in performing, reviewing and understanding tolerance and alignment studies

• Proficient in various weld design, inspection and acceptance criteria, including carbon, stainless and aluminum welding for commercial and NNS specifications.  
• Knowledgeable on 7000 manual and/or A-139 SPS Lifting and Handling Requirements
• Understanding of drawings standards to support review and approval of technical drawings and supportive analysis for lifting and handling devices, fixtures,  and platforms
• Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
• Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) including FEMAP or similar, including ability to review, validate and approve structural analysis
